The 'Formation Office' works to provide assistance in the development of strategies that link the efforts in Social Justice that are growing in Christian Brothers Schools with life after school. Present strategies include: Exposure Experiences School groups, following an Action - Reflection model spend a length of time (up to three weeks) in a marginal environment living and working with local people. The work is done through the Edmund Rice Youth Justice office of Edmund Rice Education Services and includes visits to Papua New Guinea and East Timor.
Street Retreats Small groups of year 11 and 12 students spend 28 hours living with and ministering with the people who call the parks and streets of Brisbane their home. Continually during this time students are encouraged to reflect upon their experience in the light of the Gospel and to find ways to make it relevant back in their daily lives. At present St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and St Patrick's College, Shorncliffe conduct Street Retreats. The centre point of the Street Retreat is the three hour Rosies Van experience at the end of the first day.
The Edmund Rice Movement working as part of Rosies Youth Mission provides a street (coffee van) van for the homeless of the city. At present this takes place on a Monday night in Fortitude Valley and Wednesday night in King George Square. Eight teams of up to six in a team provide an atmosphere of care and respect. 'Friends on the Street' students from all Christian Brothers Brisbane schools are involved with these vans. Kairos Retreat Kairos Retreats are operating at St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and St Patrick's College, Shorncliffe. These retreats are a three day voluntary retreat for Year 12 students which hope to link a practical jutice based spirituality with the real lives of students. The retreat format centres on talks given by a team of presenters - sharing from their personal experience - followed by reflection times and then small group discussions. Many of the presenters are young adults who are linked with other Edmund Rice ministries such as Street Van. |
